Lumina School: For bright kids with dyslexia
Since your child with dyslexia has started school...
If you find yourself answering "yes" to the questions above, we've created Lumina School for families like yours.
A Learning Difference
Kids with dyslexia are usually intelligent, sometimes even gifted. They struggle immensely with the daily reading and writing standard schools require; yet often have tremendous insight, creative outside-the-box thinking, and amazing spatial or narrative skills.
Year after year in a typical school setting, these bright kids learn to see themselves as failures, unable to succeed in their daily environment. Some learn to get through by working many times harder than their peers. This is often at the cost of spending little time developing their true strengths in addition to, well, just being a kid. Others finally give up on learning, and become the class clown or get into trouble.
Traditional schools make reading and writing the foundation of all learning, the path to exploring other subjects - especially after 3rd grade. For kids with dyslexia, this means school increasingly becomes an exhausting place focused on their weaknesses. Lumina School is different by design. By making areas of strength accessible, we build confidence and develop interests. Those interests then supply motivation fueling the hard work needed to read and write.
At Lumina School, we also accept that kids with language-based learning differences like dyslexia really are wired for learning differently. We try to teach them the way they learn best: starting with the big picture, making connections, and including hands-on activities. We recognize the importance of reading and handwriting, while honoring the fact that, for some people, text will never be the best route for learning material or demonstrating knowledge.
If this sounds like the school you’ve been looking for, please join us as we create a place for these amazing kids to love learning.
